Peru

You know about the Inca but did you also know about the oldest city in all of the Americas, plus the extensive desert and jungle, the surfing and the mountains … the magic that is Peru.

Did You Know

  • A big surprise for most visitors to Peru is the food – generally acknowledged to be the best in South America.
  • There are over 171 types of hummingbirds in Peru.
  • Hats form an important part of Peruvian culture.  You can often tell the area a woman is from by the style of hat she wears.  Ladies from the border with Bolivia favor a form of bowler hat whereas the Colca Canyon ladies wear intricately embroidered floppy sun hats.

Country Highlights

Lima
A bustling coastal city with splendid colonial buildings such as Pizzaro’s Cathedral, some of the best food on the continent and a vibrant night life.   From this modern city take a trip out to Caral, the oldest city in the Americas.  Built 4600 years ago, this extensive site of courtyards and canals has been baffling archeologists with its complexity since it was discovered in 2001. ‘Exceptionally well-preserved, the site is impressive in terms of its design and the complexity of its architectural…’ UNESCO.

Cuzco and Machu Picchu
One of the best preserved cities in South America, Cusco never fails to surprise and entice visitors.  Artisan district San Blas with its cobbled streets and whitewashed houses,  Inca stonework side by side with traditional weaving and fine dining, and some exquisite colonial buildings.  Sit in the main square and watch the international world of tourism mix with locals and llamas.  The Sacred Valley is fertile buffer zone between the Andes and the Amazon, its no wonder the Incas peppered this beautiful valley with fortresses and citadels that are still stunning monuments today.   The Sacred Valley lies between Cusco and Machu Picchu and retains many traditions.  Its outlying  villages are where the purest descendants of the Incas still live.  Come here for a relief from the altitude (its lower than Cusco) and for a true taste of traditional Andean life before arriving at the sacred site of the Incas: Machu Picchu.  Whether you arrive here by train or on foot, the biggest attraction on the continent can never fail to amaze.

The Andes mountains in Peru have:

  • 50 peaks over 6000 meters ( 19,685 ft ).
  • 1769 Glaciers
  • 12,000 lakes and lagoons

Amazon Jungle
Access to some of the best preserved and diverse ecosystems on the planet are near Iquitos in the north and Tambopata on the Madre de Dios near Cusco .  Stay in a jungle lodge while your nature guide points out hundreds of macaws, toucans, caimans – and learn about how the local communities blend with nature.

Arequipa & the Colca Canyon
The graceful colonial “White City’ brooded over by the magnificent Misti Volcano.  From its convent cloisters to beautiful plazas, Peru’s second city is warm, peaceful and charming.  This is the jumping off point for Colca Canyon.   Carved into the foothills of the snow covered Andes and   10, 607ft deep, Colca has its own character and culture.  It’s a great place to see condors sweeping over the canyon, or just take in the breathtaking scenery from your natural hot spring bath.

Lake Titicaca
Straddling Peru and Bolivia this large lake high on the the altiplano this is the highest lake in the world that you can take a boat across.  In the sun it looks blue and inviting like the Mediterranean but is icy cold.  Fascinating unique cultures are still evident among the people of the islands of Taquile and Uros.   Puno on the lake shores is known as the cultural capital of Peru.

Nazca Lines and Southern Peru
One of the world`s most enigmatic mysteries.  300 figures spread across the desert some of them 1,000 ft across.  Plus Cerro Blanco the highest sand dune in the world at 2, 078m (6, 815ft).  Huacachina has become world famous for the alternative sport of sand boarding.  Paracas is a rugged  coastal National Park that’s the perfect place to see flamingoes, boobies, penguins, seals..and The Candelaria, another  huge but mysterious shape carved into the hillside.
